Synopsis
(Spoiler Alert!!)
Red, White & Royal Blue follows an enemies to lovers storyline between a First Son of the United States and a British Prince. The movie is set primarily in England, where the story takes place. The movie begins with Alex and Henry having a feud that threatens to drive a wedge in U.S./British relations. To avoid any political fallout, the two are forced into a fake friendship, which eventually turns into a real one.
As they spend more time together, Alex and Henry's icy relationship begins to thaw into a tentative friendship, and the friction that existed between them sparks a secret romance. The movie depicts their love story and the predicament they confront as they navigate their relationship in the public eye.
The movie represents multiple queer identities, featuring gay, bisexual & trans actors and characters. Overall, the movie is a very entertaining romantic comedy that tells a beautiful love story between two men from different countries. The book has been praised for its effervescence and celebration of identity.
Self Analysis
Red, White & Royal Blue explores themes of identity and representation in a thoughtful and sensitive way, offering the viewers a glimpse into the lives of queer characters and the challenges they face. Alex and Henry's relationship is a celebration of identity and encourages us to be true to ourselves.
Alex and Henry's queer identities make it difficult for them to disclose their relationship and sexuality to the public. But the characters find support in each other and in their friends and family. The movie holds a sex positive attitude while simultaneously encouraging safe sex and education about queer love.
The film also utilises its political backdrop to encourage the mobilisation of young people registering to vote. Alex being the reason his mom wins the elections also showcases the idea that young people's ideas are worthy of being heard and valued within politics.
Red, White & Royal Blue is a fantastic addition to the growing list of queer rom-coms. As Alex and Prince Henry walk out to a supportive crowd full of pride flags towards the end of the movie, the film and its financial success make one thing clear: the world is now ready for more queer cinema.
My ratings for the movie: 4 on 5.
