Horror movies: Best of all time: What is the scariest horror film ever made? Is it the Exorcist scenes that made you want to throw up? The best horror films have a tendency to leave us gasping for air and dripping with blood, and now we finally understand why. The scariest horror film of all time, according to recent research that examined the Science of Scare, is one of our cult favourites.

The Study of Fear

Mobile, TV, and internet company Broadband Choices performed a study named The Study of Scare to investigate the purpose of terror. To find the scariest movie of all time, a study was conducted in which 50 participants were subjected to 120 hours of spine-tingling horror. Each person was connected to a heart rate monitor throughout the procedure, and this is where the solution is found.

Participants' average and resting heart rates were tracked during the trial, and any spikes in the data were noted. As we all know, when anxiety increases, your heart begins to beat faster, signalling a primordial reaction that triggers your fight or flight response. 

The highest BPM strike was defined as the point at which the heart rate peaked, and the degree of fear experienced by each participant was determined by the percentage change. Every one of the 50 movies examined for the study was chosen based on reviews from reviewers and presented in 5.1 surround sound for the brightest experience.

1. Insidious

It's not very shocking that the first instalment of the Insidious movie series ranked as the second scariest film ever. Insidious is a notable example of contemporary horror thanks to its blend of suspense from classic movies, mystery, and paranormal activity. 

The movie centres on Josh and Renai, whose son Dalton inexplicably enters a coma following the family's relocation to a new home. The real scares start when paranormal activities start happening. Participants' hearts were pounding since the Insidious franchise is being directed by horror master James Wan.

Oswald makes a commitment to unravelling the mystery after learning that there is a snuff film depicting a family's killings. Moving his own family into the victims' home turns out to be much more complicated than he had anticipated because he runs into numerous nocturnal creatures. The average BPM of those who saw the film was 86, making it a persistent scare.

3. Hereditary

When it was first released in 2019, this one went unnoticed, but it is safe to assume that those who saw it remember it. In the film Hereditary, the Graham family eventually discovers mysterious and horrifying mysteries about their ancestry. The family must escape the evil destiny they have inherited as the thread starts to fall apart.

4. The Conjuring

The Conjuring appears to have peaked with the first film, making it currently the best modern horror franchise. According to the study, viewers of the first movie in the series had heart rates that averaged 85 and peaked at 129 during the most terrifying scenes. 

In this tale, which follows consulting demonologists Ed and Lorraine Warren as they assist the Perron family in getting rid of a mystery monster, James Wan once again gives the audience goosebumps.

Jay discovers the horrifying truth that she is the newest victim of a lethal curse that is transmitted from victim to victim through sexual activity. Jay is being pursued by death, therefore he needs to find the cure for the curse quickly. It Follows has a peak BPM of just 93, so it's not quite a jump-scare movie, but it's still one of the scariest horror films ever made.

In our opinion, Paranormal Activity has received an unfair lot of criticism, and now science can support that opinion. The quality of the series declined as it progressed. The study found that spectators of the first movie had a 17% change in BPM, with a peak strike rate of 129 BPM. 

Paranormal Activity, a low-priced masterclass that cost just USD 15,000 to make, ended to make a staggering $193,000,000 USD USD 193,000,000 in revenue. With the help of several found-footage-style pictures, it depicts the tale of a young couple who are terrorised by sinister occurrences in the night. 7. The Babadook

The Babadook, a smash sensation, is one of those spooky movies that remains with you. Despite having a pitiful budget of only US$2 million, the movie has gained a reputation for being among the most terrifying horror films ever, and science has supported that. 

The single mother at the centre of the story is troubled by the violent passing of her spouse. The mom slowly becomes aware of a threatening presence all around her as she struggles with her son's dread of a monster lurking in the house.

8. The Conjuring 2

The Science of Scare study determined that the movie achieved a 14% difference between resting heart rate and movie heart rate, good enough for ninth place on the list of the scariest horror films ever made. 

The Descent involves a group of friends who were out exploring when they got trapped inside a cave. When it is discovered that they are not alone, things get worse. The Descent is a terrifying film that you should watch this Halloween.
